GIS Primary Campus Visit Lens Rehabilitation Centre (For The Blind)

Posted: 14th March 2024

At Greenoak Primary School, our educational philosophy extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. It’s a journey that encompasses self-discovery and societal awareness. Recently, our students embarked on an excursion to the Lens Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind.

The trip took place on February 29, 2024, with all Grade 2 pupils in attendance. Throughout the day, our students participated in a series of enlightening activities, each designed to broaden their understanding and foster empathy:

The first highlight was a series of musical sessions with the visually impaired musicians. Led by talented individuals, our students were captivated by the power of music to transcend barriers. They learned to appreciate sound in a new way and even had the opportunity to create music themselves.

Another interesting activity was the ICT sessions, where our students gained insight into how the visually impaired utilize technology to navigate the digital world. From screen readers to voice-activated software, they discovered innovative tools that promote accessibility and inclusivity.

Perhaps the most impactful moment of the day came during the walking exercise. Blindfolded and guided by instructors, our students experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating the world without sight. This humbling experience deepened their appreciation for the white cane and underscored its importance in facilitating mobility and independence.

Through these immersive activities, our students not only learned about the challenges faced by the visually impaired but also recognized the resilience, creativity, and strength within the community. They left the Lens Rehabilitation Centre with hearts full of compassion and minds open to new perspectives.

The excursion concluded with a donation of food items and supplies to the Rehabilitation Centre, further cementing the bond between the members of the center and Greenoak Primary School.

At Greenoak Primary School, we are dedicated to fostering not only academic excellence but also empathy, understanding, and respect for all. Our excursion to the Lens Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind exemplified this commitment in action.
