Guided Practice and Student-Centred Teaching: The Strategy Behind Success at the Cambridge Awards
While these awards celebrate the achievements of our students, they also reflect the teaching and learning culture that drives their success. At GIS, our teachers guide students to think independently and take ownership of their learning. Through consistent practice and learning from mistakes, students develop the confidence and problem-solving skills needed to excel in Cambridge examinations, higher education, and beyond.
Driving Cambridge Excellence Through Innovative Teaching: An Interview with the Head of the Mathematics Department
We sat down with the Head of the Mathematics Department to discuss the teaching philosophy and student-centred practices that have consistently produced exceptional outcomes.
Marketing Department: Mathematics is often regarded as one of the most challenging Cambridge subjects. What mindset do you encourage students to develop from the beginning of their preparation?
Head of the Mathematics Department: The first thing we help our students understand is that Cambridge examinations are not as intimidating as they may seem. The questions are based on concepts they have already learnt and practised repeatedly. Once students realise that success is achievable, they become more relaxed, confident, and better prepared to demonstrate what they know.
Marketing Department: What would you say is the defining feature of the GIS Mathematics Department’s teaching approach, and how does it differ from that of other schools?
Head of the Mathematics Department: Many schools adopt a teacher-centred approach, where the teacher does most of the talking. At GIS, students take an active role in learning. We introduce concepts, build a strong foundation, and encourage students to practise independently. Students learn from their mistakes, and improve through constructive feedback. This approach helps them deepen their understanding and become independent problem-solvers.
Marketing Department: GIS recently produced a Top in Nigeria award winner in Cambridge Mathematics. How does your teaching approach help every student reach their full potential before the Cambridge examinations?
Head of the Mathematics Department: Every student follows the Cambridge syllabus to identify and address individual learning gaps while consistently practising with past examination papers. By completing the syllabus well before the final examinations, we dedicate the remaining weeks to personalised revision, targeted intervention, and intensive examination practice. This approach equips students with the confidence and examination techniques needed to succeed in Cambridge Mathematics.
Conclusion
At GIS, Cambridge examinations are not presented as obstacles to be feared but as opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learnt through consistent preparation. Through innovative teaching, personalised support, guided practice, and constructive feedback, GIS nurtures confident, independent learners who consistently achieve outstanding results.
