Young Ocean Scholars Essay Competition

GIS is proud to celebrate Awele Omoko and Opadeji Iteoluwakiishi, who won First Prize in the Secondary School category of the Young Ocean Scholars Essay Competition, which was organized by the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA). It was part of the 2026 World Hydrography Day celebrations, drawing entries from schools across the country. The official event and award ceremony was held on Saturday, 20 June 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

Their award-winning essay, “How Sharing Ocean Information Can Help Keep Our Coasts and Communities Safe,” was developed under the guidance of Mr. Promise Nwankpa and Ms. Ocheze Nwokoma of the English Department, as well as Mr. Vincent Ejiogu of the Geography Department. The entry stood out among submissions from schools nationwide. It was recognised for its overall quality, as well as its relevance to maritime safety and environmental awareness. During the ceremony, the NHA presented GIS with two iPad tablets for the students, a cash prize of ₦6 million, and an award of excellence in recognition of its outstanding participation.

At GIS, we intentionally expose our students to national and international competitions. This approach helps to challenge their intellect, build their confidence, and provide them with real-world platforms to showcase their talents. This milestone highlights our commitment to holistic education and academic excellence.

This success is a direct result of our students’ hard work and the dedicated mentorship of their teachers. Congratulations to Awele and Iteoluwakiishi for their brilliant teamwork and for bringing such pride to the GIS community.
