Virtual Alumni Event

On Friday, 14th November 2025, Greenoak International School hosted a concise but impactful Alumni Virtual Event. It brought together past students and a distinguished parent speaker to inspire our young learners.

The event was themed “Thriving in a Digital World: How I Use AI and Other Tools to Navigate an Evolving Career Landscape”. It featured an impressive panel of three alumni and one GIS parent. Each speaker shared personal experiences, practical strategies, and real industry insights on how artificial intelligence is transforming career pathways and shaping the future of work.

The programme opened with remarks from the vice principal – Mr Daniel. After which our alumni speakers — David Bristol, Deinbo Harry, and Bonny Eradiri — shared brief but powerful insights on different topics from their professional journeys.

Our final speaker, Prof. John Raphael, ended the program by offering practical guidance on helping young people understand the potential risks of AI — from overreliance and misinformation to ethical misuse.  It provided students with valuable, timeless lessons on preparing for future opportunities in an AI-driven world.

Key Takeaways from Our Virtual Alumni Event :

  • How AI and emerging tools are used in real careers: One of the alumni speakers, David Bristol, a practising lawyer, offered a practical illustration of AI in the legal field. He highlighted how AI-enabled platforms such as NWLR and LawPavilion support legal practitioners like himself by enabling faster research, contract analysis, and even predicted case outcomes. His example helped students understand how AI is reshaping professional tasks and improving efficiency across modern careers.
  • How to use technology responsibly and avoid misuse: Our parent speaker, Prof. John Raphael, Head of Urology, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, cautioned students about common AI pitfalls such as data privacy risks, AI hallucination, distractions, and screen addiction. As preventive measures, he encouraged them to be responsible for their choices, noting that AI cannot make moral choices on their behalf. They were also advised to verify AI-generated responses and ensure that technology remains an assistant—never a master.

For parents, the session offered guidance on supporting children to make better technology choices. It also showed ways to maximise the benefits of AI, and remain grounded as they prepare for life after secondary school.

More than an educational discussion, the event strengthened the bond between our alumni and current student body. It also reinforced the value of community, mentorship, and long-term connection at GIS.

This inaugural virtual event marks the beginning of a new tradition at GIS—one that celebrates alumni achievements while inspiring the next generation of Greenoak learners to thrive in a digital future.
